Section Officer Exam Plan & Marking Scheme

The Public Service Commission (Lok Sewa Aayog) holds the Section Officer (शाखा अधिकृत) competition in three distinct stages:

Stage I

Preliminary Examination (प्रारम्भिक परीक्षा)

Must be passed to proceed to Stage II. Marks are NOT calculated in final ranking.

First Paper: Administrative Aptitude Test (AAT)

Full Marks:100Questions:100 MCQs (General Knowledge: 50, Aptitude/IQ: 30, English: 20)Time Limit:1 Hour 30 MinutesPass Marks:45
Negative marking of 20% applies for each wrong answer. No calculator allowed.

Stage II

Main Written Examination (मुख्य लिखित परीक्षा)

Core subject-specific subjective examinations. Performance in these papers directly determines final ranking and selection.

What is the new syllabus format for Lok Sewa Section Officer?

The syllabus is structured in three stages. Stage I is a preliminary screening Administrative Aptitude Test (AAT) of 100 Marks (50 GK, 30 IQ, 20 English). Stage II consists of three core written subjective papers of 100 Marks each: Governance Systems, Contemporary Issues, and Service-Related Subject. Stage III includes an IT Skill test (10 Marks), Group Discussion (10 Marks), and an Interview (40-50 Marks).

Is there negative marking in the Shakha Adhikrit preliminary exam?

Yes, there is a 20% negative marking penalty for every incorrect answer in the Stage I Administrative Aptitude Test. No marks are deducted for unanswered questions.

Who needs to take the Extra Papers (Foreign Policy & English)?

Only candidates who are competing for positions in the Nepal Foreign Service (परराष्ट्र सेवा) need to sit for the Extra Papers. They take Extra Paper I: English Language and Extra Paper II: Foreign Policy & International Relations instead of the generic Fourth Paper (Service-Related Subject).

What computer skills are tested in the IT Skill Test?

The Stage III IT Skill Test is a 20-minute practical exam worth 10 marks. It tests Devanagari Typing (2.5 marks), English Typing (2.5 marks), Word Processing (2 marks), Spreadsheets/Excel (1 mark), Presentations/PowerPoint (1 mark), and Windows basics/Internet/Email (1 mark).

Are the marks of the preliminary exam included in the final merit listing?

No. The Stage I Preliminary Exam is purely a screening test (screening threshold is 45%). Marks secured in this stage are not carried forward and do not affect the final merit list ranking.
